Spiritual Formation Coaching

What is Spiritual Formation Coaching?*

Spiritual Formation Coaching is a relationship between a coach and coachee intended to help the coachee discover how to more fully and effectively cooperate with God in a specific facet of spiritual transformation toward increasing intimacy with the Trinity (God) and greater responsiveness to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

The ABIDE Model of Spiritual Formation Coaching:

     A – Ascertain Objectives
     B – Background Information
     I –  Identify Options
     D – Discern God’s Leading
     E – Engage in Action

Coaching Mapping Tools

Richard uses one of  two tools to provide the coachee with an excellent paradigm for understanding the process and journey of spiritual formation.
The Seven Mansions of Teresa of Avila’s Interior Castle
The Six Stages of Faith of Janet Hagberg and Robert Guelich

Either of these mapping tools enables discovery of our place in the spiritual formation process and facilitates cooperation with God in the unique ways that fit that place in the journey.

Coaching Prayer

Our deepening relationship with God is largely a function of our communication with God.  Richard coaches two types of prayer which can be used to facilitate this two way communication:
Abiding Prayer – is that aspect of prayer that focuses on resting in our belovedness.
Centering Prayer – is a method designed to facilitate the development of Contemplative Prayer by preparing our faculties to receive this gift.  It is at the same time a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship.  This method of prayer is a movement beyond conversation with Christ to  communion with Christ.

Coaching the Ignatian Exercises

The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius provide a wonderful opportunity for growth in consistency and depth of prayer.  Richard uses an updated version of the Nineteenth Annotation of the Ignatian Exercises by Larry Warner in his book, Journey with Jesus: Discovering the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius or a book by Kevin O’Brien, SJ entitled The Ignatian Adventure: Experiencing the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius in Daily Life.

Coaching the Spiritual Disciplines

For some time now, there has been a growing interest in the use of spiritual disciplines to foster the depth of one’s spiritual life.  Richard will help the coachee through a process of choosing and adapting individual spiritual practices to their own life situation, personality, and stage of spiritual growth.

Coaching a Spiritual Formation Plan

The Spiritual Formation Plan helps asse4ss and summarize the coachee’s current status in the spiritual formation journey and determine relevant responses.  Richard will assist the coachee to take concrete steps in cooperating more fully and intentionally with God’s work of personal, spiritual transformation.
